Skip Tech
Skip Technology (Skip Tech) is a R&D lab designing the most sustainable, industrial-strength energy storage system under development today. This energy storage system will allow full utilization of renewables and improve grid reliability.
The Founders
Skip Technology was founded by Benjamin Brown and Brennan Gantner. Drs. Brown and Gantner met 20 years ago while completing their PhD’s in astrophysics at CU Boulder and have been dear friends ever since. During their time at CU they ended up as housemates and would commute to and from campus on a bus line named “the SKIP”.

The Vison
With specialties in astrophysics, fluid dynamics and systems design, Doctors Brown and Gantner bring a unique blend of expertise and willingness to go outside the box to any project. It was their unconventional assortment of skills that allowed them to tackle and solve, what had been, a 40 year old problem and create the first functional HBr LDES battery.
Broadly implemented the Skip battery will make 24hour solar power feasible and cost competitive. Our LDES battery is a powerful and vital weapon in the battle to avert a climate catastrophe. It is also the gateway to an emerging $4 trillion cumulative market.
Design & Science

Skip Tech’s design and science have been validated by the National Science Foundation (NSF), resulting in the receipt of a highly-selective NSF SBIR Phase II award.
Chemistry

The Skip Tech design and chemistry doesn’t degrade over time and solves long-standing problems for flow batteries.
Assembly
Their system will be assembled in shipping containers to simplify transportation and deployment.
The company plans to outsource assembly and manufacturing, leveraging the expertise of their network of experienced partners, allowing Skip Tech to maintain focus on product design and improvement.

THE SKIP TECHNOLOGY BATTERY
The Science
Skip Tech batteries work through a reversible electrochemical reaction that uses hydrogen bromide (HBr) as the electrolyte. HBr is split into H2 and Br2 during the charging phase when power flows into the system. The hydrogen ions react at the anode to become hydrogen gas and the bromide ions react at the cathode to become liquid bromine.
During the discharging phase, the hydrogen gas and the liquid bromine are split into their corresponding ions again and release energy. No chemicals are permanently changed or lost during this process since the batteries are closed cycle systems.
While flow-batteries are a tried and tested technology, our novel liquid membrane and related IP has finally made HBr storage viable. Due to their energy dense and fast chemistry, HBr flow-batteries are more competitive than any other flow-battery on the market. HBr systems are safe, and utilize non-toxic, readily available materials. The simplicity of our design eliminates points of failure allowing for a long lasting cost effective storage solution.

“Liquid batteries have tried various thin-film membrane materials that could work, could last, or could be affordable, but rarely come through on all three counts. The liquid membrane delivers a trifecta.”
