SAFE FOR THE PEOPLE
SAFE FOR THE PLANET

Skip Tech

Skip Technology (Skip Tech) is a R&D lab designing the most sustainable, industrial strength, energy storage system under development today. This energy storage system will allow full utilization of renewables and improve grid reliability.

The Founders

The company was founded by two astrophysicists with expertise in fluid dynamics and system design. Unlike prevalent lithium-ion batteries, the Skip Tech energy storage system uses hydrogen and bromine chemistry making it safe for people and safe for the planet.

Skip Tech’s design and science have been validated by the National Science Foundation (NSF), resulting in the receipt of a highly-selective NSF SBIR Phase II award.

Chemistry

Bromine: Abbreviation is Br, atomic number is 35, and atomic mass is 79.904.

The Skip Tech design and chemistry doesn’t degrade over time and solves long-standing problems for flow batteries.

Assembly

NEXT GEN BATTERY STORAGE

The Science

While flow-batteries are a tried and tested technology, our novel liquid membrane makes Hydrogen-Bromine (HBr) systems economically viable. HBr flow-batteries have higher energy and power densities than any other flow-battery on the market, are safe, and use non-toxic, readily available, materials.

“Liquid batteries have tried various thin-film membrane materials that could work, could last, or could be affordable, but rarely come through on all three counts. The liquid membrane delivers a trifecta.”

THE FOUNDERS

Skip Tech was founded in Portland, Oregon by physicists Dr. Brennan Gantner (CEO) and Dr. Ben Brown (CSO).

Dr. Gantner and Dr. Brown have known each other for more than two decades, starting with their concurrent pursuit of astrophysics PhDs at University of Colorado Boulder. They have a shared vision for a zero-carbon future and for providing tools to help communities adapt and thrive in a climate-changing world.

The name of their company, Skip Tech, is a reference to the time they shared riding the Skip bus-line as students in Boulder.

With their combined expertise in fluid dynamics science and designing, building and testing state of the art systems, the founders have unsurpassed advantages in the creation of their novel liquid battery.

Benjamin Brown, PHD

President & Co-Founder
Dr. Brown (CSO) He developed the Dedalus Project which is a widely used open-source framework for solving partial differential equations; this framework powers our modeling efforts. He leads our liquid membrane design research and oversees the research team. Dr. Brown is an expert, with decades of experience, in hydrodynamics, theoretical modeling, and the use of super-computers programming for modeling and analysis. He has served as a tenured university professor of astrophysics (University of Colorado, Boulder), teaching classes at all levels in astronomy, fluid dynamics, and mathematical methods for computation and data analysis. Dr. Brown’s academic work was recently featured on the cover of “Nature” magazine (Moment in the Sun: Near-Surface Instabilities Drive the Solar-Magnetic Dynamo.)

Brennan Gantner, PHD

CEO & Co-Founder
Dr. Gantner (CEO) is an accomplished rocket engineer. He has successfully designed and flown space-certified hardware and has over 20 years of experience in project management as well as prototype design, building and testing with NASA, Lockheed Martin and NOAA. He translates Dr. Brown’s designs into buildable devices: his skills in team leadership, modern additive manufacturing techniques, and material science have underpinned the development of our hardware. Dr. Gantner also brings expertise in clean tech entrepreneurship, leading the core team who are developing our business.
